I had the absolute pleasure and privilege of being Steve's manager over the last 10 months. Despite having never met in person, I've been aware of the legend that is Steve Berry since I started in the Department 13 years ago and I'm so grateful to have had the opportunity to both work closely with him, and support him and his family during a difficult few months. Steve taught me an awful lot despite the short period of time we knew each other. But there are three main things that will stick with me. Bravery - Steve was never cowed by his diagnosis and he was determined to fight and enjoy as much of life as he could. Compassion - Steve never stopped thinking about others no matter how hard things were for him. He constantly worried and checked that I was ok and for which I am ever so grateful. Pride and dedication - Steve was the most committed, hard-working civil servant I've ever met and DfT and the Civil Service is a better place for having Steve in it.
