So sad to learn of this news. Steve was an exceptional colleague and I feel privileged to have worked with him over the past six years; a complete professional with unsurpassed knowledge of and dedication to his sector who was also very approachable, friendly, enthusiastic, humourous and always took time for his staff. I remember in my very first week at DfT when I didn't know anybody - without any prompting, he invited me to join him in a meeting so I could get a better idea of what was going on. He thought of my needs when I didn't even know who he was. His views, ideas, energy and advice were highly sought and respected from both colleagues and ministers alike. If you went to a conference with Steve, he seemed to know just about everybody in the room. Thinking of your family and friends at this time. Rest in Peace Steve, you will be greatly missed.
