If potholes are the nation's number one transport gripe then Steve surely lays a very strong claim to having had the greatest impact on the travelling public's day to day journeys of any single individual at DfT. A superlative civil servant and a superlative colleague for his deep expertise and winning ways with stakeholders right across the board, his wicked sense of humour and unstinting support for colleagues even when up to his eyes leading the department's response to the latest major flooding incident - Steve was an utter delight to work with over the years. He leaves an enormous hole in DfT and the local roads sector and will be so incredibly sadly missed.
